Edge of Eternities: New Magic Set Blends Fantasy and Sci-Fi
Jul 11, 2025

Wizards of the Coast is taking Magic: The Gathering into uncharted territory with Edge of Eternities, a set that fuses traditional fantasy with space opera aesthetics. This upcoming release transports players to the Sothera system, a setting defined by interplanetary travel, a devastating holy war, and the ominous resurgence of the Eldrazi titans. As the spoiler season accelerates toward the global launch, several new uncommon cards have surfaced, showcasing the set's mechanical depth and sci-fi flavor.
Reroute Systems
White decks gain a flexible instant in Reroute Systems, a card designed to offer utility in both offensive and defensive scenarios. This modal spell forces players to choose between two effects: dealing two damage to a tapped creature or granting indestructible to a target creature or artifact for the turn.
For Limited formats like Draft and Sealed, this card appears to be a staple. The ability to shield a spaceship artifact after investing turns to crew it—thanks to the new "Station" mechanic—offers significant tempo value. Conversely, the damage mode acts as a punish for opponents who tap their creatures to activate their own vehicles. Beyond the Limited environment, Commander players running Feather, the Redeemed will likely slot this in immediately, as the recurring value of a one-mana protection spell is difficult to overlook.
Roving Actuator
The red slice of the color pie introduces the Roving Actuator, an artifact creature that highlights the new "Void" mechanic. To maximize this card's potential, players must trigger Void, which activates during a turn where a nonland permanent leaves the battlefield or a spell is "warped."
When the condition is met, this robot allows its controller to exile an instant or sorcery with a mana value of 2 or less from their graveyard and cast a copy without paying its mana cost. This synergizes heavily with strategies utilizing disposable resources like Treasure tokens, Clues, or Blink effects to ensure Void triggers consistently. Given that the set features a high volume of robot-type creatures, Roving Actuator may also find a home in tribal decks, recycling cheap burn spells or cantrips for added value.
Seedship Broodtender
Representing the Golgari combination, Seedship Broodtender provides graveyard support and tribal synergy. This green and black Insect starts its work immediately upon entering the battlefield by milling three cards, fueling the graveyard for later plays. Its utility extends to the late game with an activated ability costing 3BG. By sacrificing the Broodtender, players can return a creature or spacecraft card from their graveyard to the battlefield at sorcery speed.
The lore behind this card connects to the Eumidians, an insectoid race actively terraforming the planet Evendo. This implies a heavy insect presence in the set, making the Broodtender a natural fit for existing insect-focused Commander decks. Strategies led by Grist, the Hunger Tide or Zask, Skittering Swarmlord will benefit greatly from a creature that fills the bin and acts as a reanimation spell.
