Magic: Edge of Eternities Blasts Off with New Mechanics
Jul 08, 2025

Prepare for liftoff as Magic: The Gathering charts a course for the stars with its upcoming science fantasy set, Edge of Eternities. Launching on August 1, this space opera-inspired collection introduces innovative mechanics, new factions, and the thrilling return of some formidable classic adversaries.
A New Era of Vehicles: Spacecraft and the Station Mechanic
Moving beyond traditional vehicles, the set unveils the spacecraft subtype. These artifacts revolutionize the familiar "crew" concept with a new keyword: station. Instead of tapping creatures each turn, you tap a creature to place a number of charge counters on the spacecraft equal to that creature's power. Once the spacecraft accumulates enough counters, it transforms permanently into an artifact creature.
Take the legendary The Seriema as an example. Upon entering the battlefield, it lets you search your library for a legendary creature to add to your hand. Once it gathers seven charge counters, it becomes a 5/5 flying creature that grants indestructible to your other tapped legendary creatures. Notably, legendary vehicles and spacecraft can now helm your deck as Commanders.
Characters and Story in the Sothera System
For those preferring a traditional Commander, meet Sami, the human artificer and cat-loving captain of The Seriema. Described as a consummate con artist and scoundrel, Sami specializes in creating robot tokens. The expansive narrative for this system, crafted by author Seth Dickinson, follows Sami's exploits, a mysterious artifact called the Endstone, and an escalating holy war, forming one of Magic's most ambitious stories to date.
Planetary Exploration and New Lands
The station mechanic also fuels a new category of lands: planets. These five color-aligned lands draw inspiration from iconic staples like Tolarian Academy but require a significant investment of 12 charge counters to activate their powerful abilities. This design philosophy rewards players for embarking on a "tiny quest" to unlock massive, game-swinging effects.
Familiar Faces in a New Frontier
While the set explores a fresh corner of the multiverse, it welcomes back known entities. The cunning planeswalker Tezzeret returns in a colorless incarnation as Tezzeret, Cruel Captain. This design makes him a versatile addition to a wider array of Commander decks, as he finds a setting ripe for his schemes and ambition. The set also marks the return of the hive-mind Slivers and introduces a new sci-fi flavored take on the Lhurgoyf.
Embodying the Void: Warp and Void Mechanics
The ancient, cosmic threat of the Eldrazi reappears, introducing the warp ability. This mechanic captures their rapid traversal of space, allowing you to cast a spell for a reduced cost from your hand, only to have it exile at the end of your turn. You may later cast it again for its full cost. Complementing this is the void mechanic, representing the peril of space through kicker effects that trigger if you've warped a spell or a nonland permanent left the battlefield that turn.
Pioneering the Unknown: Landers
To capture the spirit of exploration, the set introduces Lander tokens. These tokens are sacrificed to search your library for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield tapped, helping you establish your foothold on new worlds.
Collector's Showcase: Pulp Sci-Fi Art
Collectors and art enthusiasts will discover a treasure trove of thematic treatments. Beyond borderless basic lands, the set features artwork reminiscent of vintage tourism posters and unique card frames where the text is integrated into the image, mimicking the bold covers of 1970s pulp science-fiction novels.
