Roblox Enforces Age Verification & Communication Limits

Roblox is implementing mandatory facial verification and age-based communication restrictions for its users in response to a surge of lawsuits and investigations concerning its child safety protocols. These significant changes are designed to enhance user safety and create a more age-appropriate online environment within the popular gaming platform.

Phased Rollout of Age Verification and Communication Features

Starting this week, users have the option to voluntarily verify their age to maintain access to communication features. This voluntary period allows users to familiarize themselves with the new process. In early December, Roblox will begin enforcing these age-check requirements in select international markets, including Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. The platform plans to extend these mandatory age verification measures to all users globally in January.

Addressing Child Safety Concerns Through Technology

The impetus for these new safety measures stems from multiple legal challenges, including actions by the attorneys general of Texas and Louisiana. These lawsuits highlight concerns about Roblox exposing young users to potential risks such as grooming and inappropriate content. By introducing facial verification and age-based chat, Roblox aims to proactively address these issues and create a more secure platform.

The Age Verification Process

To complete the age verification, users will be guided through a process involving their device's camera. They will need to follow on-screen prompts for facial verification. Roblox assures users that all images and videos captured during this process will be promptly deleted after verification is complete. The verification system is being handled by a third-party vendor, Persona, which also adheres to strict data deletion policies.

Understanding Age Groups and Communication Boundaries

Upon successful age verification, users will be assigned to one of six distinct age groups:

  • Under 9
  • 9 to 12
  • 13 to 15
  • 16 to 17
  • 18 to 20
  • 21 plus

Communication will be enabled between users within the same age group and, where deemed appropriate, with similar age groups. For instance, a 12-year-old, assigned to the 9-12 age bracket, will be able to communicate with users up to the age of 15. Conversely, users aged 16 and above will be restricted from chatting with this younger user.

Raj Bhatia, Roblox's VP and head of user and discovery product, explained that these changes are intended to facilitate social interactions among age-appropriate peers and to minimize contact between minors and unknown adults. This move represents a significant step towards a more controlled and secure communication environment on the platform.

Enhanced Age Accuracy and Parental Tools

Roblox emphasizes that this facial verification system offers a more precise method of determining user ages compared to relying on self-reported birth dates during account creation. Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief safety officer, highlighted that this explicit age estimation requirement before accessing communication features is a pioneering initiative for companies in the gaming and social media sectors.

In addition to these new communication controls, Roblox is also launching a dedicated Safety Center. This new resource will provide parents and caregivers with essential guidance, helpful tools, and the ability to configure robust Parental Controls for their children's accounts.
