World of Darkness Hires D&D/MtG Vet as Creative Director
Jul 10, 2025

A major shift is occurring in the tabletop role-playing game industry as a seasoned creative leader moves to a flagship horror franchise. Jess Lanzillo, formerly a vice president for Dungeons & Dragons and creative director for Magic: The Gathering, has been appointed as the new Creative Director for White Wolf's World of Darkness.
This strategic hire coincides with White Wolf's initiative to consolidate its licensing and publishing operations internally. Lanzillo will helm the creative development for the company's iconic IPs, including Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and Hunter: The Reckoning.
A Creative Homecoming for a Industry Veteran
In an official statement, Lanzillo expressed a deep, personal connection to the World of Darkness, citing it as a creative inspiration since the 1990s. She emphasized her commitment to the core elements that define the franchise: intricate lore, meaningful player choices, and mature storytelling. Her goal is to nurture these qualities while expanding the audience for these beloved worlds.
Lanzillo's appointment is part of a broader trend of veteran talent departing from major publishers like Wizards of the Coast. Recent months have seen other established figures from Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering pursue opportunities with independent studios and competitor publishing arms.
Building a Premier Horror Entertainment Brand
White Wolf leadership has signaled strong confidence in this new direction. Marco Behrmann, Executive Vice President of White Wolf, highlighted Lanzillo's expertise in transmedia development and audience-focused narrative as key assets. He positioned her hiring as a cornerstone of the studio's growth and a reflection of parent company Paradox Interactive's dedication to establishing World of Darkness as the preeminent global horror brand.
The move is seen as leveraging both professional acumen and genuine fan passion to usher the World of Darkness into a new phase. This strategy appears timely, with the anticipated October release of the video game Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 marking a significant return to digital platforms.
Lanzillo's focus will be on holistic IP growth that honors the community and legacy of the World of Darkness while exploring its vast potential across games and other media.
